It lies adjacent to the Severn estuary and forms part of the string of protected areas providing wildlife with access to that feature. It is designated as a National Nature reserve showing it's importance. The RSPB have built an impressive building on the reserve with toilets and a beautifully positioned cafe and educational facilties. There is a floating walkway crossing one of the three large lagoons which provide habitat for ducks and other waterfowl. There is a bird hide overlooking another of the lagoons and a number of screens allowing you to watch the bird without disturbing them. Crossing the floating walkway brings you to the edge of the Severn and the East Usk lighthouse. The trail lets you follow the edge of the Severn in both directions.
